Copyright & Takedowns

What we are entitled to publish, what belongs to us, and how to tell us we have got it wrong.

  1. I.What we publish

    The catalogue is built from works whose copyright has expired, and from works we hold a licence to publish. We check provenance before a title goes up.

    Copyright expires at different times in different countries. A work in the public domain where we publish may still be protected where you read. Where the two conflict, your local law governs what you may do with it.

  2. II.What is ours

    A public-domain novel is free. The edition we made of it is not. The following are our own work, and are protected in their own right:

    • Our translations and our simplified editions.
    • Our typesetting, layout and cover art.
    • Our introductions, notes and margin apparatus.
    • Our narrated audiobook recordings.
    • This site — its design, its code and its text.

    “Roman Reads”, the mark, and the wordmark are ours and may not be used without permission.

  3. III.What you may do with it

    Quote us. Cite us. Write about us. Ordinary fair dealing and fair use are not affected by anything here, and we would rather be quoted than not.

    What we ask you not to do is reproduce a whole edition, republish our translations, or feed our editions into a dataset for training a model.

  4. IV.Telling us we got it wrong

    If you own rights in something published here and believe we had no right to publish it, write to info@romanreads.com with the subject “Copyright” and include:

    • What work is affected, and where on this site it appears — a URL for each.
    • What right you hold in it, and how you hold it.
    • Your name and a working contact address.
    • A statement that you believe in good faith the use is not authorised.
    • A statement that the information you have given is accurate.

    We take complete notices seriously and act on them quickly. We will remove or restrict access to the material while we look, and tell you what we found.

  5. V.If we disagree

    If we believe the material was properly published — because the work is out of copyright, or because we hold a licence — we will say so, and give our reasons.

    If we removed something of yours in error, tell us and we will restore it.

  6. VI.Repeat infringers

    Accounts used repeatedly to upload or redistribute material that infringes somebody's copyright are closed.

  7. VII.The margin guide and other people's words

    The reading guide quotes and paraphrases the book it is beside. It may occasionally produce a passage resembling text it was trained on. That is not intentional, and it is not a licence to reproduce anything.
